Beginning in the 1870s and continuing on for nearly 50 years, many people attempted to put the heat of the sun to work powering motors, but these efforts were derailed by the discovery of abundant energy supplies. However, the discovery of the selenium cell in the 1870s began experimentation with the direct conversion of sunlight into electricity that continues to this day.
